Something Is Working Up Above My Head is the latest album from the duo, built from the ground up around the energy, limitations, and unpredictability of their live show. After years of creating records and adapting them for the stage, this time they worked backwards—writing songs that could only use what they could recreate live. Many of those songs were tested in front of thousands of people while touring with The Wood Brothers and Gregory Alan Isakov, evolving from show to show as the band pushed themselves outside their comfort zone. The result is their most immediate and fully realized record yet, blending messy folk songwriting, loud guitars, 808s, sweet harmonies, dark humor, and unexpected moments of beauty. “Love Song From A Dog,” which features Gregory Alan Isakov, became an unexpected fan favorite after being introduced live, while “Two Wolves” delivers the kind of fuzzy, heavy riff built for a massive stage. Across the album, vulnerable characters and strange, often hilarious stories explore identity, duality, family, uncertainty, and the feeling that something unseen might be pulling the strings. In the end, Something Is Working Up Above My Head embraces the chaos and turns it into something uniquely their own.
